A Heart-to-Heart with God
Ever been frustrated with where you are in life? Ever have big dreams and wonder how…or if…they’ll ever be a reality? Me too. One day I had a conversation with God that went a little like this:
Me: God, I know You placed these dreams in my heart. And yet, year after year, that’s exactly what they remain…dreams. I’m not getting any younger this side of Heaven. How is this going to happen? When? Will it ever? Maybe I’m thinking about it in all the wrong way, and it IS happening right now, but I’m too stuck in what I think it should look like that I can’t see how You’re fulfilling it in me right now. God, what’s up?
God: Remember when I said to be a David not a Jacob? Remember how Jacob struggled and strove to walk in the blessing that I wanted to pour out on him? Yes, he wanted My blessing, but what he didn’t realize was that it was My dream to give it to him. He didn’t have to strive, he could have just walked together with Me and received blessing upon blessing. But David, he just loved to spend time with Me. He trusted that if I said something would happen, it would. He didn’t try to make anything happen even though he had many opportunities. He chose trust and confidence in Me and My ways over his plans to achieve, which would have ultimately led to frustration and fruitless efforts. When did I call David to be king? When did he know that was My dream for his life?
Me: He was a boy (or at least, that’s the way I’ve always interpreted the story of when Samuel anointed him king when he was shepherding his father’s flock).
God: And when did he actually take the throne?
Me: Well, I don’t know exactly how many years, but he was a man.
God: Right. So, he knew about My call and dream for his life, which was great, for years before it actually became a reality in his life. There are some that may say it was wasted time. Why bother to continue herding sheep when you are going to be a king? Why bother being an armor bearer when you are going to be king? Why not seize the throne when you have the chance? Why not? Because more than anything, more than any call, David loved Me. He knew My heart and knew My ways and knew that if he was truly called to be the King of Israel, I would make it happen. He wouldn’t have to do anything but honor and follow Me. And that’s exactly what he did. He was tested and tried and found to be true. There was no wasted time. David may not have been crowned king for years, but he never stopped becoming king. Every single experience and year was used to shape him and strengthen him so when he was crowned king, he was ready; I could trust him to lead My people.
Maybe you have dreams that seem elusive, forever at some indistinct day in the future. Or maybe it feels like they keep slipping away no matter how hard you wrap your heart and will around them. I want to encourage you to keep pursuing the presence of God with all you’ve got because His dreams and blessings for you are far better and greater than any you or I could concoct on our own. As if that wasn’t enough, He wants to pour out His blessings on you and draw you into His dream for your life.
As you pursue His presence and His heart first and live a lifestyle of trusting, honoring obedience to Him, He will accomplish the work in your life. Even if it seems like that dream may never become a reality; remember that one day David was a fugitive and the next he was king! Through all those years of waiting, and at times fleeing for his life, God made David king in his heart before He made David sit as king on the throne. God can do the same in you and in me. But regardless of where we are…a field, a cave, a palace…we never stop becoming who God wants us to be when He is our passion and priority. So here’s a take away challenge: What is one way to adjust your schedule or lifestyle to make God a priority in your life? Do it. Blessings!
