Prophetic Arts

Prophecy. It’s always through words, right? The Spirit of God fills us and fills our mouths with His messages to build up, encourage, and comfort. Absolutely. But for the past couple of years, God has been impressing upon me, heavily, that He is releasing prophetic arts.

Music. Drawing. Painting. Sculpture. Dance. These are all creative expressions—along with wordsmithing, of course. Each of these represents a way we can share something unique and beautiful with those around us. Creativity is a gift from our Father, the Creator of the universe. Unfortunately, we have more than just a few examples of creativity that do not honor our Creator, but rather the deceiver. Anyway.

The gift of prophetic words is amazing! I’ve been on both the receiving and the giving end, and there’s nothing like a genuine connection with the heart and mind of God through the prophetic. But…God doesn’t just create through words. He doesn’t just pour out His Spirit for the purpose of pouring out words. Sometimes, He pours out His Spirit for design, craftsmanship, and music.

Is there biblical precedence for this? You may ask. Yes, there is. The FIRST reference of God filling someone with His Spirit was NOT for the purpose of releasing prophetic words, but rather, for the purpose of design. Fashion design!

Exodus 28:3 contains the very first reference in the entire Bible of God filling someone with His Spirit. In this case, He filled (or endowed in the NAS, but the Hebrew word is the same) “skillful persons” to make Aaron’s garments (his high priest garments). The second reference to this phrase, being filled with the Spirit of God, was just a few chapters later in Exodus 35, where God said that He filled Bezalel for the purpose of designing and crafting with embroidery, wood, stone, and various metals and also to teach these skills to others. In both of these instances, the Spirit of God filled these men, but not for the release of words, but for the release of crafted works of beauty! For art!

I am so excited that God has already begun raising up prophetic artists to release “words” that don’t contain actual words but rather some form of visual expression with prophetic authority. I’ve learned of a few who are already doing this, and when I went to their websites, I saw perfect replicas of images I’ve seen in prophetic visions and dreams. My human mind went ?!!!! It was AMAZING! To me, this is so wonderful, because my words often can’t come close to describing what I actually see in a vision or a dream, and my visual art skills are…well…VERY sad. So, I love that God has gifted artists in ways different from mine to share the prophetic in ways I cannot.

But, I believe, prophetic art can go even beyond just sharing a visual experience. I have a daughter who is quite gifted and talented in art. She has a sketchbook full of portraits of people she has never met. She told us that she sees these faces clearly as she draws them. It was revealed, through a prophetic word, that these are real people that God is doing a work in, and through her prophetic art gift, she is partnering together with Him in this work through intercession. What a gift!

So, yes, words are important, and prophecy given through verbal utterances isn’t losing value or power, but God is doing and moving and stirring up prophets who will operate not with words (alone), but with brushes, pencils, pastels, clay, instruments, and motion. It’s an exciting time of a great release of creativity and power, and I am so excited to see it!
